Zotero wins for most students, free, open-source, plugins for Word and Google Docs, browser extension that one-clicks any paper into your library. Mendeley is solid but Elsevier ownership concerns some users; the cloud sync is reliable. EndNote is dominant in institutional settings but expensive ($300+) and the UX shows its age. Verdict: start with Zotero. Switch to EndNote only if your lab mandates it.
