How to Write a Dissertation Literature Review That Survives Your Committee

Literature reviews fail because students summarize sources instead of synthesizing them. Synthesis means organizing by theme, not author. Pick 4–6 themes that emerge across your 40–80 sources, write a section for each, and compare findings within each section. Identify the research gap your dissertation fills, explicitly, in writing. Conclude with how your study extends the literature. Use a matrix (Excel works) to organize sources by theme, methodology, and findings. Your committee wants to see that you understand the conversation in your field, not just that you read papers.
